From “Finding Your Animal Teachers”: “Animals of the Heart”

“Animals of the Heart” and “Animals of the Way” work in similar ways. They both teach and protect you. However, “Heart Animals” are with you from the beginning. They are the animals that guide you through your life. Heart Animals represent various aspects of your life – mind, body, spirit, and emotions. These animals have much to share with you. Some are more active in childhood, and others more so in adulthood. They do not disappear but may remain in the background for a while.

When you work with an animal, first you need to find out about that animal. Where does the animal live? How does it interact with other animals? Is it a predator or prey? What can you learn about the animal that you can apply to your own life?

For example, beavers are the only animals, besides people, who can transform their environment. They dam streams and creeks, chop down trees, and form ponds. Beavers build their lodges in the middle of their ponds. In your life, beavers could teach you how to transform where you live.

If Squirrel has presented Herself as your “Heart Animal”, then learn as much as you can about squirrels. Squirrel may show up in your dreams to tell you something. Or She may “chee” a warning at you from a tree, in real life. As you work with Squirrel, you begin to see how She teaches, assists, and protects you.

What can Squirrel teach you? She can show you how to save and be prepared. Squirrel can, also, teach you the art of doing nothing or simply playing. As you work with Squirrel, you begin to see all the things that She can teach you. Squirrel has useful skills that you can adapt to your life.

How can Squirrel protect you? After all, these small animals are easily run over by cars. When threatened, squirrels race up trees and leap from one high place to another. Squirrels also warn each other with loud “chees”. When pursued, a squirrel will scurry around the opposite side of a tree to remain hidden. Squirrel teaches, “When in danger, go to higher ground.” She says, “When threatened, stand out, and be noticed.”
