The size of a horse, Moose is the largest member of the Deer Family. A distinctive looking animal, He has high humped shoulders, long legs, a bulbous nose, and a long pendant of skin (bell) under his throat. Known as Moose in North America, He is called Elk in Europe and Asia. (North American Elk (Wapiti) in Europe is Red Deer.)
A solitary animal, Moose live apart from other Moose most of the year. Mother Moose only tolerates the presence of her Calf for about a year but no longer. Meanwhile, Bull Moose does not have Harems like other Deer. Instead, He patrols his territory; a lone figure that rarely encounters another Moose. Only when Cow Moose wants to mate, will She call to Bull Moose. For a brief while, They are not alone.
Living in the boreal forest, Moose has a strict and constant feeding schedule that He follows. For the maintenance of his huge antlers, Moose makes energy efficient choices. A boreal forest specialist, Moose feeds on berries, twigs, and bark. In the winter, He paws at the snow to feed on edible grasses. He regulates his nutritional intake to take advantage of the marshy and aquatic plants in his territory. To get to the tasty plants, Moose dives down in the lakes.
Among the Native peoples of the Far North, Moose replaces Buffalo (American Bison) and Elk in their myths. To them, Moose is a powerful animal in both war and peace. Bull Moose is bellicose when defending territory, and Mother Moose vigorously protects with her Calf. Because of his uncanny ability to find food, Moose is also considered wise.
An ungainly-looking animal, Moose carries Himself with dignity. Watch Moose serenely eating his marsh plants or diving in a lake, and see a being of dignity. Moose moves with grace and ease. He teaches that all have dignity.
