Also known as Wapiti, Elk (Cervus elaphus) is the same species as Red Deer of Europe. Fossil evidence shows that Elk is an Old World emigrant that recently came to North America, during the Last Ice Age. Elk is considered the most highly evolved member of the Deer Family.
The most vocal of all mammals, Bull Elk’s bugle call epitomizes the wilderness in the autumn. He calls to Cow Elk to join his Harem. Meanwhile, Cow Elk knows by his bugling how vigorous Bull Elk is. He may try to herd Her with other Cow Elks, but She makes the final decision.
Much of what Bull Elk does require a great deal of energy. His bugling takes a lot out of Him. Also the growth of his antlers requires Him to eat more. In order to accumulate needed fat and muscle, Bull Elk searches wide and far for nutritious plants. Because of his needs, Bull Elk wanders more and is less social than Cow Elks.
Cow Elk lives in a herd with her Calf. Together, her Friends will help Her defend her Calf. An older more experienced Cow Elk will be the leader of the herd. Only when She gives birth does Cow Elk leaves her herd. Like Red Deer, She goes into the forest and has her Calf. Mother Elk will do what She can to keep her Calf Elk safe. Only when Calf Elk is strong, will She rejoin the herd.
Elk live lives of passion. Bull Elk prepares for courting all year long. When fall comes, He is ready. Meanwhile Cow Elk lives out her passion, by protecting her Calf or deciding which Bull Elk to mate with. Whatever They do, Elk do it with passion. Learn from Elk, how to light the fire under you.
