The trained “Seals” at circuses and amusement parks are really female California Sea Lions. Because of their playful, sociable nature, California Sea Lions are the usual choice of aquarium trainers. In addition, California Sea Lions can identify objects, remember where the objects are, and distinguish them by size, color, and shape.
The gregarious California Sea Lion is a common sight in northern California. Among the most graceful of Marine Mammals, California Sea Lion twists and turns through the water with effortless ease. She moves with great speed, in a manner that resembles underwater flight. Active by nature, California Sea Lion is more agile in water and on land than many Seals.
What California Sea Lion teaches us is versatility. She slaps her flippers to talk to her fellow Sea Lions, and also to entertain people. She can dive to a depth about the height of the Eiffel Tower of France, and still move swiftly on land. California Sea Lion uses all her talents. You should try to do the same. Just do not turn into a circus act.
Conservation Note: California Sea Lion is protected in the United States.
