SATURNIIDAE: ROYAL MOTHS AND GIANT SILK MOTHS

Being Spectacular

Moon Moth, large green-blue moth with yellow spots

Moon Moth

These giant Moths are some of the most beautiful and interesting Insects in the world. They belie the idea that Moths are dull and boring while only Butterflies are worth noticing. Many Saturniidae have well developed eyespots such as Cecropia Moth, or have long tails on their hindwings such as Luna Moth, or both as Moon Moth does. These Moths are often referred to as “Emperor Moths” because of their large size and unusual beauty.

Since these Moths are rarely abundant, people hardly ever take Them for granted. Even people who have no special love for Insects will admire a Royal Moth fluttering against a window at night. Still other people find the delicate beauty of Luna Moth a cause for quiet celebration.

Even Saturnid Caterpillars are noted for being spectacular. Along with their sharp-looking spines and barbed horns, Saturnid Caterpillars have day-glow green and bright pink bodies. People can easily see Them crawling on a tree limb. In addition, their finger length size make Saturnid Caterpillars hard to miss.

Because of their large size and striking colors, Saturniidae are spectacular in all their forms. Often seen at lighted windows at night, these Moths startle people with their beauty. Meanwhile, Saturnid Caterpillars easily win people’s attention with their gaudiness.
