One of the most unusual moths of North America, Luna Moth is well known for Her green-yellow colors and long tail. Since She is active late at night, people rarely see Luna Moth. She and Her cousin, Cecropia Moth, belong to the family of Silk Moths.
Cocoons of Luna Moth are fairly flimsy. When Baby Luna Moth is ready to emerge from Her cocoon, She hurls Herself against one end of the cocoon. Then She tears at the silk with Her forewing horns. While She is doing all this, Luna Moth makes such a noise, that people wait to witness Her grand entrance.
Watching Luna Moth emerge from Her cocoon is cause for celebration. See this large beautiful Moth as a sign of beauty, and a new cycle of life. Once Luna Moth emerges, She mates with a male. After laying Her eggs, Luna Moth dies. And so the cycle begins again. Be Happy to see Luna Moth.
