ANIMAL CONSERVATION

Rhinos at a watering hole

Many people have banded together to save animals from extinction. People can choose from groups that are devoted to saving a particular animal to umbrella groups devoted to saving wildlife habitats. (Before you get involved with any group, take steps to ensure sure that they are legitimate.) The following are a few examples of animal conservation groups. (The following quotes are from their respective websites.)

UMBRELLA ANIMAL GROUPS

The Nature Conservancy: “Saving the Last Great Places on Earth”

“The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. How can The Nature Conservancy protect ALL of these places? By joining together with communities, businesses, governments, partner organizations and people like you, we can preserve our lands and waters for future generations to use and enjoy.”

The Ocean Conservancy

The Ocean Conservancy Logo

“We envision a world of healthy, protected oceans with wild and flourishing ecosystems, free of pollution, and filled with diverse and abundant marine wildlife. As the largest and oldest organization dedicated solely to protecting the oceans, we take our work very seriously. The Ocean Conservancy combines science-based advocacy, grassroots activism, litigation, education and outreach to find lasting solutions to issues affecting our oceans and all marine life. Our challenge is to make people more aware of their intimate connection with the oceans, and to enlist them in our vital mission of preserving their health, diversity, and beauty.”

World Wildlife Fund

World Wildlife Fund–the Conservation Organization

or

World Wildlife Fund–Global Network

Since its inception in 1961, WWF has worked to conserve nature and ecological processes. It has done this through a combination of action on the ground, national and international advocacy work to establish appropriate policies, and international campaigns to highlight and demonstrate solutions to crucial environmental problems. WWF has contributed significantly to the development and impact of the world conservation movement and to sustainable development in a period of great pressure on the world’s natural resources.”

Without help, the Atlantic salmon may face extinction. ASF's primary objective is to prevent this tragedy and to restore depleted salmon populations. ASF has played a key role in the effort to restore Atlantic salmon runs to the rivers of eastern Canada, New England and abroad since 1948.”

British Hedgehog Preservation Society

The aims of the society are: To encourage and give advice to the public concerning the care of Hedgehogs particularly when injured, sick, treated cruelly, orphaned, or in any other danger. To encourage children to respect our natural wild-life--by supplying information and giving lectures and thus fostering an interest in Hedgehogs.  To fund serious research into behavioural habits of Hedgehogs and to ascertain the best methods of assisting their survival.”
