HONORING ANIMAL TEACHERS

ANIMAL WELFARE AND RIGHTS

Animal welfare and rights are complex issues since the spectrum ranges from ending zoos to compassionate care of working animals. Anti-hunting groups and hunting groups (such as Ducks Unlimited) are both working for animal welfare, but they differ dramatically in their methods. The following websites offer a wide assortment of links for associations and articles to help people decide and focus on their particular way of honoring animal teachers.

“Animal Welfare & Rights Sites”

The AgNIC Wildlife Damage Management Web site is a cooperative project between the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), with headquarters in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Colorado State University Libraries (CSUL). On their site, they write “Many people are concerned with the treatment of animals. Animal rights and animal welfare are terms used for different philosophies on the care, use, well-being, and rights of animals. This can include a view of empathy, and not wanting to see animals hurt or an attitude that animals should have the same moral rights as humans. This page provides a short introduction to the topic but does not advocate a specific viewpoint. Readers are encouraged to research websites and other readings and reach their own conclusions on these issues.”

World Animal Net

From their site, “World Animal Net is the world's largest network of animal protection societies with over 2,000 affiliates in more than 100 countries working to improve the status and welfare of animals. Our aim is to focus the animal protection movement and strengthen the impact of key animal campaigns and lobbying. World Animal Net will act as clearing house for important animal protection issues with global perspective.”

This site lists many sites that promote vegetarianism, cruelty-free products, or conservation.
