What people call Dogfish (Scyliorhinidae) are really Cat Sharks. However the common names for Cat Sharks are confusing. Some Cat Sharks are called Dogfish, while others are called Swell Sharks. In order to avoid confusion, the use of scientific names is extremely important.
Dogfish are harmless bottom-living Sharks that feed on easy prey such as Crabs and Whelks. They track down their prey with the aid of their highly developed senses. Their teeth are small and thick, and are specially adapted for crushing the shells of Mollusks and Crustaceans.
These primitive, small sharks have changed little in one million years. Dogfish are so well suited to their way of life that further evolution was not needed. Dogfish teach that living in a happy, little rut is fine. Just remember, to venture outside your comfort zone once and awhile.
