Written by two people who love animals, Animal Energies, a small paperback, is focused solely on the animals themselves. Gary Buffalo Horn Man and Sherry Firedancer write about their encounters with the animals. The authors explain, “The information the book contains comes from our direct work with the animals, the Native American stories we’ve heard, and the intuitive knowledge we have gained from these beings.” Practical in their approach, the authors present a frank but loving teaching for each animal. They cover fifty-eight animals, with many not discussed elsewhere, such as Fly, Gopher, Jellyfish, Mosquito, Pigeon, Shark, and Wolverine. The only drawback to this book is that the Cold-Blooded Ones are treated as a generic group of “Frog”, “Lizard”, “Snake”, and “Turtle”. However, the book does include an entry for Alligator.

Here is an excerpt from “Shark”. “Sharks are viewed stereotypically as mindless eating machines. Singly, and when they are not hungry, Sharks tend to be quite peaceful. Sharks inspire great terror because they have the power of the predator, fearless and unpredictable. You can call upon Shark if there is something in your life that you need to frighten away or devour.” The authors' treatment of sharks is evenhanded.
