A native of the New World, Hummingbird has enchanted all who have seen Her. This tiny fast Bird inspires wonder in those who watch Her feed. Despite her small size, Ruby-Throated Hummingbird migrates from the eastern United States across the Gulf of Mexico to Central America. What makes this passage extraordinary is that Ruby-Throated Hummingbird does not eat on her journey. She stores up a layer of fat equal to half of her body weight.
Other Hummingbirds like Ruby-Topaz Hummingbird and Broad-Billed Hummingbird spend most of their day in flight. They hover from flower to flower looking for the energy-rich nectar They need to survive. To live, a Hummingbird needs to eat from 2,000 flowers a day. To go through the night without feeding, Hummingbirds slow their metabolic rate and go into a kind of hibernation.
The Aztecs of Mexico regarded Hummingbird as a warrior. Despite Hummingbird’s delicate appearance, She is a bold, quarrelsome Bird who will readily attack any intruder that strays into her territory. With the frenzied beating of her wings, Hummingbird will defend Herself with her long beak.
This tiny Bird with her brightly colored feathers and unique hovering flight inspires wonder in people. Her brilliant plumage is seen only as a blur as Hummingbird hovers before a flower for a sip of nectar. The hum of her tiny wings is music to people’s ears. (Each kind of Hummingbird’s wings hum at a different note on the musical scale.) Her iridescent colors and music instill a sense of wonderment in people.
Important Hummingbird Teaching: Accomplishment
“The ruby-throated hummingbird is a wonder of migration. Every winter it makes an amazing journey. Some have been known to make a journey of 2500 miles or more, from Alaska to Central America. Because of it, the hummingbird is a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible. It will teach you how to find the miracle of joyful living from your own life circumstances.” Copyright: “Animal-Speak”, Ted Andrews.
Important Hummingbird Teaching: Joy
“Hummingbird darts lightly through the world, spreading its message of joy and beauty, and teaching us to appreciate the wonder and magic of everyday existence. Hummingbird brings the gift of joy. Learn to laugh and be happy.” Copyright: Unknown.
Important Hummingbird Teaching: Transcending Time
“Hummingbird shows us how to re-visit the past for the purpose of releasing it instead of being caught in a permanently backward flight pattern. It also helps us to see that if we step aside we may see our life differently. Hummingbird teaches us to transcend time, to recognize that what has happened in the past and what might happen in the future is not nearly as important as what we are experiencing now. It teaches us to hover in the moment, to appreciate its sweetness.” Copyright: Beyond the Rainbow (Constance Barrett Sohodski)
