CROW

Maintaining Your Sanity

A crow next to William Wordsworth's grave

"Wordsworth" by Gavin Barns

Social birds, Crows drive some people crazy, while amusing others with their antics. Most people are familiar with these medium-size black Birds. They see Crows everywhere, roosting in trees, eating road kill, swooping down to grab someone’s lunch, or mobbing the unfortunate Owl. Whoever they are, everyone has an opinion about Crows.

What people do agree on are Crow’s intelligence, adaptability, and versatility. A member of the Songbird family, this sooty black Bird uses his voice for other things than singing, such as chattering and calling to his friends. The most highly evolved of all Birds, Crow’s intelligence is on the level with Primates and Dolphins.

Crow uses his intelligence to good effect. To open Mussels, Carrion Crow will drop Them on docks. Many Crows use tools to crack open eggs. Other Crows watch people to determine when is the best time are to steal their food. Faced with a problem, Crow will think it through, and then work it out. Crow does not continue to try things that obviously do not work.

Crow may drive people with insane with his activities. But unlike people, He does not keep doing the same thing over, expecting different results. Crow does not indulge in that type of behavior. Learn how to be sane from Crow.

Important Crow Teaching: Law

“Crow teaches about "walking your talk" and to follow your heart. Also, Crow teaches understanding and evaluating rules of behavior. He helps to decide which ones warrant changing or even breaking.” Copyright: Unknown.

“It is said that in the courtship process the male crow's voice takes on a singing quality. This tells us what the basis of sacred law is. There is one unfailing principle by which we can test our principles, that of unconditional love.” Copyright: Beyond the Rainbow (Constance Barrett Sohodski)

Crow Teachings Includes:

“This animal is to be treated with care. Along with the raven, the crow is a symbol of conflict and death, an ill omen associated with such Goddesses as Macha, Badb, and the Morrigan. Although the crow was ill omened, it was also considered to be skillful, cunning, single-minded, and a bringer of knowledge. It is of value when trickery is needed. It also teaches you to learn from the past, but not hold onto it.” Copyright: “By Oak, Ash, and Thorn”, D.J. Conway.

“Followers of Crow often have great insight about life's events. Their eyes may be open to things others do not see, if they learn to look beyond their mortal limitations. They are in tune with death and dying and should not be afraid of the unknown, for Crow knows it.” Copyright: Raven J. Brown, The Raven’s Aviary.
