BALD EAGLE

Statecraft

Bald Eagle

The voice of Bald Eagle rings out over the Northern Lakes informing everyone that He is in charge. His call is much a part of the wilderness as the cry of Loon. When Bald Eagle calls, He declares his perch, his territory, and his kingdom. Sitting erect on his favorite perch, Bald Eagle surveys the landscape, with a piercing gaze of his yellow eyes. While He assesses life along the river, He imparts a sense of majesty and unflinching independence.

To see Bald Eagle soaring in brilliant sunshine is an experience in transcendence. Many Native Americans regard Bald Eagle as the Sky God, the Thunderbird. Soaring to the heavens on fabulous wings, Bald Eagle communes with the Great Mystery. For Native Americans, He carried messages and powers of the Great Mystery to them.

However, Bald Eagle has a dark side that many people do not recognize. An inhabitant of the rivers and estuaries of North America, He is partial to Fish. Benjamin Franklin (one of the U.S. Founding Fathers) observed, “He is a bird of bad moral character; he does not get his living honestly, you may see him perched on some dead tree, where too lazy to fish for himself… Bald Eagle pursues Fishing Hawk and takes it (fish) from him.” In plain language, Bald Eagle is a pirate. Like a free-booter on the Caribbean, He descends on an unsuspecting Osprey heavily laden with a Fish, and snatches the prized booty. Many observers of Bald Eagle have recorded this unseemly behavior of His.

What Bald Eagle teaches is people statecraft. He sizes up the situation and decides what should be the best course. One important tenant of statecraft is “wait and see.” Bald Eagle accomplishes much by thinking first, and acting later. Another tenant of statecraft is judgment. “Don’t do too much for too little gain.” This is when his judicious use of piracy comes to play. Practice your own statecraft by using your judgment.

Bald Eagle’s Teachings Includes:

“Bald Eagle is an adaptable soul. He learns from experience, and he is willing to try new approaches to problem solving. He is ready to take advantage of any opportunity that comes his way, and if necessary, he will go looking for opportunity.”Copyright: “Wolf Song”, Jeanette Spencer and Lew Hartman.

“If an Eagle or more should approach while you are praying, then you know that your prayers have been answered. Sometimes the Great Creator sends in an Eagle just check up on us, so when we see this, we always give special thanks to the Creator and the Eagle. The Eagle carries our prayers directly to the Great Creator.” Copyright: “Spirits of the Earth”, Bobby Lake-Thom.
